Falls and Fractures
Many families place elders in care facilities because they fear their loved ones will fall if left alone at home. Facilities have many tools for managing fall risk based on an elder’s needs, from lowering a patient’s bed and padding the floor around it to using soft bed or chair restraints, from fitting patients with motion alarms to providing one-on-one supervision by a sitter. There is no excuse for a facility that fails to use these tools and repeatedly lets an elder climb out of bed or out of a chair and try to walk without aid and unsafely. It is no surprise when that elder suffers falls and fractures that could have been prevented.
